Artist's Statement

I work in many mediums, photography, video, animation, installation. I like to take elements out of their accepted and habitual context, thus giving them a new and often incongruous meaning. I aim to bring my viewers to question their own perceptions, hopefully making them conscious of the transitional and ephemeral quality of the process by which we humans confer meaning to things.

I was born in Paris, France, and I've lived in Montreal, New York, San Francisco, and San Jose, Costa Rica. I hold degrees in Communications & Multimedia and Digital Technologies in Design and Art. I am also one half of creative duo Notice Bureau, with which I've worked on short films, music videos, and other projects in collaboration with the fashion and music industry. My work, (including the world famous Big Eyes) can be seen www.thingsbyme.com.

Field Excursion - Project Statement
-------------------------------------
This series consists of eerie, mysterious portraits of strange creatures, which were made out of pieces of meat and fish, and given the names of existing or imaginary bacterias. When exhibited, they are simply presented with the words: "Specimens photographed by Celia Marais". Some of these specimens were modeled and animated, and integrated into the website for electronic musician Amon Tobin. Visit them at www.amontobin.com. The series is composed of nine framed, archival quality giclee prints. Seven of them are 28 x 35 cm, one is 35 x 35 cm piece, and one is 60 x 76 cm.
